When Moses fled on foot to Midian's well He spared himself alone from Egypt's hell And brought with him two worlds of sinful rot From Thutmose and Goshen's unrighteous lot. Filled full of worldly wisdom, riches, deeds, So scarcely self-aware of any needs. Four score because of strength to these unlearn And learn impoverished meekness most men spurn. What second-guessings, doubts, and deep regrets Did this bridegroom of blood each day beget? What daily ruminations on the lam With Jethro's thirsty ewes and hungry rams? His old ambitions buried in the sand With no eyewitness watching in this land— Except the God of Jacob Who would make This stammering, empty vessel truly great. Until the greater, meeker Prophet came, Of Whom the first was like but not the same; Who in forgotten, no-good Nazareth Built offerings fit for kings with every breath Through sighs and supplications with great tears To Him Who redeems all our obscure years, Who saves us from our seeming nothingness And pours us out to share His holiness.
